Welcome to www.activetouch.org, the active touch community website. The aim of this site is to collate and enhance scientific research on active tactile sensing and its neural substrates in animals. This web-site is sponsored by the European Union Framework 7 BIOTACT project, however, we hope that it will outlive that project and be useful for a wide research community. It is also being created in conjunction with the Scholarpedia Encyclopedia of Touch which aims to provide a comprehensive source for information concerning the scientific understanding of tactile sensing.
Active Touch is currently investigated by many research groups in a wide range of animal species and artificial systems. This website will provide researchers from this international community with a single virtual meeting place where ideas and resources can be shared, and where new researchers can learn and contribute. The site aims to accelerate progress and the transfer of knowledge in the research fields of both natural and synthetic tactile sensing.

Goals
The specific goals of the website are:
- To gather and disseminate information on active touch
- To provide a directory of groups and researchers working on active touch sensing
- To promote the sharing of data-sets, data-analysis software, and other technical data (e.g. high-speed video recordings)
- To promote networking and the sharing of ideas within the active touch research community
